What is the Time Person of the Year?
Every year since 1927, Time magazine has released a Person of the Year edition. In the past, they used to be called “Man of the Year” or “Woman of the Year.”

When is the Time Person of the Year Announced?

Literally every one of these top picks has already been the Person of the Year before, most of them very recently. This by itself does not suggest that none of them would be selected, however.
It is also interesting to note that going by the odds (see below), there are some vastly different opinions about who has a good shot at becoming the Person of the Year for 2023.

The best starting point for figuring out who the Person of the Year is going to be is simply to follow news and social media. Keep your fingers on the pulse of the global population.
Here’s the thing though — you may not want to follow the news too closely. It is important not to over-think this. Time isn’t deliberately trying to be unpredictable when they select someone. In fact, the person they choose is usually going to be somebody who is pretty obvious.
If you are following obscure news stories, you have to remember that by definition, those stories are not the ones that are (usually) having a sweeping influence around the globe.
The only exception in a case like this would be if you are following a story that you are confident is going to explode into the limelight late in the year, giving you an edge if you back a dark horse now.
Remember, the Person of the Year selection is about influence. Just because you think someone is important, that does not necessarily mean that everybody else in the world agrees with you.
You need to be looking at the movers and shakers, not simply at everyone who has done anything of great value.
Just as you are looking for someone influential, rather than someone who is merely important, you are also not looking for someone that you simply like.
It is easy to cringe when someone horrible makes the cover of Time magazine, but remember, it is not always an award for good deeds to be the Person of the Year.
In short, you should not bet on who you want to win, simply because you want them to win it. You should bet on who you think is going to win, even if you hate their guts. Nobody wanted to see Hitler on the cover of Time magazine. Nevertheless, he was a logical choice that year.
Take a look at the most recent decade to see if you can spot a trend in the selections. Is there an increasing number of women, for example? Or an increase in selections of groups of people? Does it look like Time is starting a series of related selections? How often are names repeating from previous years? How often are you seeing multiple selections for a single year?
Originally, the 1941 selection was supposed to be Walt Disney’s Dumbo. Time would have declared the elephant “Mammal of the Year.”
But on December 7th, Pearl Harbor was bombed. So, Dumbo did not make the cover. Instead, it went to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
That is a huge last-minute change, and one that most bettors probably could not have seen coming. Then again, with international tensions as high as they were, perhaps in hindsight it was not a complete surprise.
There is no such thing as a sure bet with the Person of the Year, because you never know what could happen at the 11th hour. Keep that in mind when you are choosing your stake size.
