What is Counter-Strike?
I am going to start out this post by explaining what Counter-Strike is in general, just in case you are completely new to it.
Counter-Strike is a video game series that has been around since 2000. The series has had a number of different developers and publishers, and takes the form of multiplayer tactical first person shooter (FPS) games. Titles have been playable on Windows PC, macOS, Linux, PS3, Xbox and Xbox 360.
Counter-Strike owes its inception to the Half-Life series. CS was first developed as a Half-Life mod. Here are all the games that have released in the Counter-Strike series:

What is Counter-Strike 2?

Is Counter-Strike 2 Out Now?
Counter-Strike 2 is out now. It released on September 27th. Currently, the only platforms are PC and Linux.
This is not a huge surprise, despite the fact that CS:GO was available on older consoles. The Counter-Strike series is very focused on eSports nowadays, and eSports are usually played on PCs, which offer more precision with aiming.
You’re about to read more about this subject, but man, teamplay is very, very important!
Is Counter-Strike 2 Free?
When CS:GO originally launched, it was not a free game. It became a free game toward the end of 2018. This probably has you wondering whether CS2 is free.
The answer is yes, Counter-Strike 2 is free-to-play. If you already had CS:GO, you should have received the free update automatically. And if you did not have CS:GO, you still get to play the game for free, you just need to download it.
Counter-Strike 2’s monetization involves optional purchases of cosmetics or Prime Status.
What to Know About the Transition to Counter-Strike 2
We have already answered some of your questions about the transition from CS:GO to CS2, but there are still some things to discuss specific to eSports.
For weeks, one of the big questions on bettors’ minds has been, “Which game will be played in tournaments? Will it be CS:GO or CS2?”
For a while, the answer to that question was “It’s complicated.” We were seeing tournament organizers literally saying they did not know yet, and that was only a couple of weeks ago.
But it looks like we are moving firmly into the era of Counter-Strike 2. Esports Insider reports, “Esports tournament organizer ESL Gaming has announced that all of its upcoming tournaments will take place in Counter-Strike 2, the newly-released update to the Counter-Strike franchise. This includes the majority of ESL’s major events, except the ongoing ESL Pro League, which started before the official Counter-Strike 2 launch.”
There is one exception, which is ESL Pro League Season 18. You will notice that this tournament is still using CS:GO. The reason why is because it began prior to the CS2 launch.
It may interest you to know that the PGL Major Copenhagen will be the first Major to feature CS2 instead of CS:GO. It will take place in March 2024.
So, as you can see, things are not too complicated anymore. To recap:
- Counter-Strike 2 has completely replaced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. You can no longer download CS:GO. You can only play CS2.
- Aside from ESL Pro League Season 18, all future tournaments on which you can bet will feature CS2.
How is Counter-Strike 2 Played?
Now that you have a thorough understanding of the transition from CS:GO to CS2, let’s talk about CS2 gameplay. For this section, I am going to assume you have never watched a Counter-Strike match in your life. If you already are deeply familiar with Counter-Strike, you can just skip ahead to the next section.
Counter-Strike 2 is a first person shooter (FPS) game. That means that the players all see the world in the game as if through their characters’ eyes, rather than from a third person camera floating somewhere behind them.
Players in a match are divided into two teams. One team is Terrorists, and the other team is Counter-Terrorists. The two teams compete to fulfill their objectives. Exactly what those objectives are depends on which game mode they are in.
- Competitive
The most popular game mode is Competitive. Each team has five players. They enter into a best-of-30 match. The rounds can either take the form of Bomb Defusal or Hostage Rescue. Once a team manages to win 16 rounds, they are declared the winner for that Competitive match.
- Bomb Defusal
In this mode, objectives are as follows:
Terrorists: This team must attempt to plant a C4 explosive. Their goal is simply to make sure that the explosive manages to go off once the timer runs out. They also can attempt to eliminate all the members of the opposing team.
Counter-terrorists: This team needs to either try to eliminate all the players on the opposing team before they can plant the C4, or manage to defuse it if the other team does manage to plant it.
- Hostage Rescue
In this mode, objectives are as follows:
Terrorists: This team needs to try and stop the other team from rescuing the hostages. They can do this either by eliminating the other team, and/or guarding hostages effectively until the timer runs out.
Counter-terrorists: The goal of this team is, of course, to rescue the hostages. They can also try to eliminate the opposing team.

And then there are also “Deathmatch” CS:2 maps which feature the same maps as the “Casual” category.
Some of the maps have not been altered much from their original state in CS:GO. These maps are called “Touchstone Maps,” and include Dust 2, Mirage and Vertigo. They look better because of Source 2, but they are otherwise pretty much what you remember.
The maps Ancient and Nuke look a lot better than they did in the past, and are being referred to as “Upgraded Maps.”
Finally, there is a category of “Overhaul Maps.” These are maps that not only look a lot different in terms of their graphics, but also have significant changes with respect to their layouts. These include Inferno, Italy and Overpass.
This is the “Dust 2” map. This is something that can be argued all day long, but many people seem to think this may be “the best” map!
Counter-Strike 2 vs. Counter-Strike Global Offensive: What are the Differences?
Obviously, some things have changed with the introduction of Counter-Strike 2. Here are some key differences to be aware of at launch:
- CS:GO used the Source game engine. CS2 has upgraded to using the Source 2 engine.
- CS:GO’s game modes included Arms Race, Competitive, Demolition, Flying Scoutsman, Retakes, Danger Zone Wingman, Casual, Deathmatch and Private Queue. CS2’s game modes include Competitive, Wingman, Casual, Deathmatch, Private Queue and Premier.
- CS:GO had a 64 server tick rate, but CS2 is sub-tick.
- You will see familiar maps in CS2 that you remember from CS:GO, but they have received major graphical overhauls.
- Smokes and grenades have been upgraded compared to what you recall from CS:GO.
- The menus and heads-up display (HUD) in CS2 have been changed from the old menus from CS:GO.
- Matchmaking rounds work differently than they used to. In the past, there were 12 rounds in each half, but now there are 15. Additionally, these games used to go into overtime if there was a draw, but now, they can end in a draw.
- Counter-Strike 2 has received a variety of quality of life upgrades. Examples include a new feature to inspect grenades, matches being terminated if the system detects cheating, and enhancements to bots and player models.
We are not going to go into all of these changes in detail, but now you know what to look up if you want to know more.
While CS2 has definitely improved upon CS:GO in some respects, not all of the changes have necessarily been positive.
Some players are upset that certain features that were present in CS:GO appear to be absent from CS2, including certain maps and game modes (quite a few game modes, actually).
On top of that, CS2 did not release with any new maps, game modes or weapons. The game mostly just looks better.
Needless to say, a lot of gamers are not amused by these issues, especially in light of the fact that CS:GO is no more.
In fact, some players have gone as far as to speculate that the very reason that CS:GO was removed and replaced completely rather than continuing to exist alongside CS2 was to force everyone over to CS2. Perhaps otherwise the player base would have become fragmented.
Is that true? We have no idea. But it does seem like Valve needs to get its act together and bring back some of the features that players are missing, and/or add some exciting new features to CS2 to help offset some of those losses.
Perhaps Counter-Strike is too big to fall apart, but there could still be some decline if players’ disappointment remains high enough.
Let us just hope that this is a shaky release that Valve will remedy soon with updates that bring back what everyone is missing.
A Brief History of Counter-Strike eSports
You know how Counter-Strike is played, as well as some of the ways in which CS2 differs from CS:GO. But what events can you place wagers on? Let’s discuss more about how Counter-Strike eSports are organized and which tournaments you can follow and bet on. We will begin with a quick overview of the eSport’s history.
Counter-Strike eSports betting dates clear back to the original installment in the series, which was simply called “Counter-Strike.” The earliest tournaments took place the same year the game was released, in 2000. But the first ever “Major” happened in 2001. Early tournaments were organized mainly by the Cyberathlete Professional League (CPL). Over the years that followed, Counter-Strike became one of the biggest eSports in existence.
CPL became defunct in 2008, however, after which the company ESL (previously called “Electronic Sports League“) took over organizing CS tournaments. There was a temporary decline in CS’s popularity in eSports as MOBA games became big. Plus, Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) never really took off.
When Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) came out in 2012, that changed everything. CS:GO quickly became an immensely popular game, in large part due to excellent support by Valve.
Valve itself began sponsoring CS:GO tournaments at that point, using in-game optional purchases to fund a $250,000 Prize Pool for the game’s initial Major. That Major was part of DreamHack Winter 2013 in Sweden.
Two years later, a Counter-Strike team trade union formed which set standards for prize pools. This was also around the time that ESL founded the World eSports Association (WESA). This organization worked to improve scheduling and other conditions for players.
There is no single organization that has the exclusive right to host Counter-Strike tournaments. That said, Valve continues to sponsor Major Championships. ESL organizes a lot of the most prominent tournaments, but there are other organizers that sometimes participate as well.
What Counter-Strike 2 Events Can You Bet On?
The general landscape of tournaments should not be much different with CS2 than it was with CS:GO. We should keep seeing the same events; the players will just be playing a different game.

Look for players with stamina to do well. Be wary of those who seem run-down, either by their tournament schedules or the overall demands of their careers.
On a physical level, motor skills are essential for scoring well in Counter-Strike 2.
Players not only need to be able to aim well, but also need to have excellent tactical skills to compete effectively in CS2. Those include tactics on both the team and individual levels.
One of the most challenging things about playing an FPS game like CS2 is being aware of everything going on. That includes both events immediately around a player (the enemy lobbing a grenade in one’s direction, the teammate about to cross into one’s line of fire, etc.), and events taking place elsewhere on the map.
A player might be working toward an objective, fending off multiple opponents, and maintaining situational awareness, all at once. They might also be keeping an eye on their health and searching for ammo. That is a lot to juggle.
Players absolutely must have the ability to work together as a functional team in order to succeed at CS2. If there is a lot of infighting and disagreement, or even just bad communication, teams will struggle.
Players need to be flexible and adaptable in CS2 as they switch from mode to mode and map to map, and as they face a wide range of opponents. Not only do all of these scenarios call for different tactics, but as teams adjust to each others’ tactics, they must continuously refine their own.
A player in CS2 will not do well for long if they are conceited and only in it for themselves. They need to be willing to take the backseat sometimes to support their teammates rather than go for glory, and they also need to be able to learn from their mistakes.
